Okinawa prefecture is located on the east side of the Asian Continent and on the western end of the arch of the Japanese islands. The prefecture consists of 160 large and small islands (49 inhabited islands) dotted around the vast ocean stretching about 1,000 km from east to west and about 400 km from north to south. The Nansei Islands are located in a subtropical oceanic climate and have an amazing natural environment including beautiful coral reefs and treasured wild life. The islands have formed a unique culture through trading and exchanges with China and Southeast Asian countries.
Based on “Okinawa’s 21st Century Vision” that contemplates the future of Okinawa in 2030, the government is currently working to create peaceful and abundant “Churashima” – beautiful islands of Okinawa with the spirit of carving a new era, global exchanges and mutual support.
